What is a base print?

Why is it that you request a one color print, but you are quoted a two color price? It’s probably because the color in your design will require a base print. In layman’s terms, a base print is like a primer. If you screen print an ink color on a dark shirt, the ink will “soak” into the fabric of the shirt and look splotchy. The ink will lose it’s brightness and the actual ink color will be discolored. By laying down a base coat of white, it seals the fabric and allows the following ink color to be as brilliant color as intended. The photos below illustrate the difference between a print with and without a base. The image on the left has no base, the image on the right does have a base.
